Where does the tiki theme come from?

Tiki carvings represent a rich tradition of Polynesian artistry that has thrived for centuries. Crafted primarily from wood, these intricate sculptures portray a variety of deities and mythological figures central to Polynesian lore. Beyond their aesthetic appeal, tiki carvings serve as meaningful decorations in homes, restaurants, and various venues. They also play a significant role in ceremonies and rituals, symbolizing good fortune and safeguarding those who honor them. Incorporating tiki carvings into your space is not just a decorative choice; it’s a vibrant way to infuse your environment with the essence of Polynesian culture.

What is the difference between a Tiki Murph tiki hut and a tiki bar?

A tiki hut is essentially an outdoor structure with a thatched roof, made from real Florida palm leaves, designed to evoke a tropical Polynesian aesthetic, while a tiki bar is a bar specifically styled with tiki decor like carved support posts and bamboo skirting, often including a tiki hut-like design, serving tropical cocktails and usually located in a setting meant to feel like a tropical paradise; the key difference is that a tiki hut is primarily a shelter, while a tiki bar is a place to drink with a specific theme.

How long does it take to build me a tiki bar, tiki hut or tiki hammock?
Depending on the size of the project, the location of the installation and the time of year, it can take several weeks to a month or two depending on our schedule.

How long will my real Florida palm thatch roof on my tiki bar, tiki hut or tiki hammock last?

In the mid-Atlantic region your palm thatch roof should last seven to eight years, sometimes even longer. Sunlight, wind and temperature are the biggest factors in thatch roof longevity, as a thatch roof in Florida (where you have year round warm weather) would not last as long as the same thatch roof in Delaware.

Can I install the real Florida palm thatch leaves on my tiki hut and tiki bar myself?
We sell the real Florida palm leaves; however, there is a special way the palm leaves are folded and nailed to the roof structure in order to remain waterproof and wind resistant.

Should I put a tarp or cover over my tiki bar or tiki hut thatch roof to protect it from the harsh winter?

Under no circumstances should you cover your thatch roof with a solid cover such as a tarp. With no ventilation your thatch roof will retain moisture and begin to deteriorate and grow mold. If you want to cover your thatch roof due to a bad storm it is okay for a few days. You can install a netting to protect the roof from extreme wind.

Can my free standing two post tiki bar be anchored down?

Yes. If it is on a deck the tiki bar frame can be screwed down to the deck boards. If it is on soil you can install anchors from the tiki bar frame into the ground, either with or without cement.

What is re-thatching?

Re-thatching is the process of renewing your tiki huts or tiki bars roof by affixing new authentic Florida palm fronds. When it's time for a roof replacement, we carefully strip away the old palm fronds, prepare the underlying surface, and thoroughly inspect the frame before installing new palm thatch.

Can you replace my synthetic leaf roof with an authentic palm fronds?

In most cases yes, but it depends on the design of your roof structure. You can fill out our contact form or custom order form and attach photos of your current tiki bar or tiki hut including outside and inside pics.

HAND CARVED TIKIS, FIGURES AND BAR STOOLS

What types of wood do you use in your carvings?

We use a variety of locally sourced wood including white pine, cedar, red cedar, black walnut and Florida palm.

How do I protect the bottom of my carving from the wet ground?

We recommend putting furniture leg protectors on the bottom of your carvings as you would on the bottom of a chair leg.

How long does it take to make me a custom chainsaw carved tiki?

Depending on the size, design and finish (painted, charred or natural) it takes approximately two weeks, depending on the time of the year and the amount of scheduled work.

How do I maintain my chainsaw carved tiki?

Nearly all of our carved items are given a coat of Minwax Indoor/Outdoor Helmsman Spar Urethane Gloss. Using 120 grit sandpaper lightly scuff the surface of the tiki and apply urethane using a paintbrush. Also make sure to put at least two coats on the bottom of your tiki. However, if there are parts of your tiki in white, such as the teeth, it is best to skip using the urethane and instead use a spray can of gloss polyurethane

What is a relief cut?

A "relief cut" in carving refers to a cut made in a flat surface where the design is carved to stand out from the background, essentially creating a raised image by removing material from the surrounding area, rather than carving deeply into the material itself. Key points about relief cuts: (1) The carved image protrudes from the background surface. (2) Can be "low relief" (slightly raised) or "high relief" (significantly raised. (3) To achieve the raised effect, the material around the design is cut away.

I see a lot of pineapple themes in your carvings... why?

The pineapple has many symbolic meanings including hospitality, welcome, fertility, luck and peace. However, an upside down pineapple means you are a swinger or looking to "hook up".

What do the different carved tiki faces mean?

The contrasts in these designs are deeply tied to their symbolism and cultural significance. Each design element carries a distinct meaning that can vary from one culture to another. For instance, a tiki face with a protruding tongue may symbolize a fierce warrior, while a face with a closed mouth could indicate a peaceful deity, and a large, smiling face often represents joy and satisfaction.
